First one in the Local Love series, and it’s an easy pick. If you haven’t been to Apps’ Mill Nature Centre yet, you’re missing one of the best free things to do around Brantford.
Where it is and what you’re walking into
Apps’ Mill sits just outside town on Robinson Road, tucked between Brantford and Paris off Rest Acres Road. It’s run by the Grand River Conservation Authority, and the Nature Centre building itself was originally donated by S.C. Johnson and Son of Brantford. The property covers about 107 hectares, or roughly 266 acres, of mature forest, fields and wetland, with Whitemans Creek running straight through it.
Heads up if you go: the main entrance gate to the Nature Centre is currently closed. Everyone’s parking along Robinson Road instead and accessing the trail from there, so don’t turn around thinking the place is shut down. Just find a spot along the road and head in.
There are two main trail loops. The shorter one is about 2.1 miles and takes most people 45 minutes to an hour. The longer loop, which follows the creek further, runs closer to 3.1 miles and takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Both are considered easy walking, nothing technical, though there’s enough elevation change to feel like you did something. Keep in mind the GRCA has had sections closed in past years for hazard tree work related to emerald ash borer, so it’s worth a quick check of their site before you go if you’re planning the full loop.
The mill itself
The name comes from the old Apps’ Flour and Grist Mill, built in 1841. It sits in ruins along the creek, and you’ll cross a couple of small bridges to get to it. You can’t go inside, but it’s the kind of stop that makes a walk feel like more than just exercise. There are also remnants of the old millrace and pond nearby if you know to look for them.

- Admission is free
- Dogs are welcome on the trails but need to stay on leash
- Trails are open year-round, including for snowshoeing in the winter
- Spring brings wildflowers along the trail, including trillium and wild columbine
- The Nature Centre building runs school programs, day camps and family events, and those need to be booked ahead through the GRCA, but the trails themselves are open to anyone, any day

If you’re a family looking at homes on the west side of Brantford or out toward Paris, this is exactly the kind of spot that makes the area worth it. It’s not just about the house you buy. It’s about what’s a ten minute drive away on a Saturday morning, and this is one of the better answers to that question around here.
